Placement exams are required of select new students to help students and advisors choose courses that correspond to their levels of achievement. Placement exams must be taken prior to registration for first semester courses and are taken only once. Students cannot test on their orientation date. Students must register for placement exams online through the Testing Services office.
NIU offers placement exams at the DeKalb campus in chemistry, foreign language and mathematics. Exams are determined by a student's course enrollment plan. For example, a student is required to take the Chemistry Placement Exam if they plan to enroll in CHEM 210 and CHEM 212.
