Department of Anthropology

Some NIU anthropology faculty are focusing their research on sustainability and ecology. Their efforts constribute to global initiatives for better understanding of cause, effect and adaptation. 

Climate Change

NIU Presidential Research Professor Giovanni Bennardo is investigating climate change across the world, studying how small food-producing communities perceive these environmental and climatic changes. Supported by the National Science Foundation, this project hopes to influence the discourse about climate change.

Field Research

Dr. Mitchell Irwin looks in-depth at the ecology and behavior of the diademed sifaka (Propithecus diadema) and other lemur species as they adapt to life in small, disturbed forest fragments in eastern Madagascar. His research will contribute to a better understanding of behavioral ecology, health and conservation of wild primates.
