About the Student Government Association

History

The Student Government Association (SGA) was founded in 1968 to promote the welfare of students on NIU’s campus. Thirty-five years later our organization’s purpose then and now is to voice the concerns and questions of you, the student body, to the university administration. Executive elections are held each spring semester and senate elections are held in the fall through a campus-wide election.

Mission

We play a critical role in the university’s system of shared governance. Serving as the voice of the student body to the administration, we further motivate you to be active leaders on campus by cultivating an environment of learning and experiences that go beyond the classroom.

Vision

As we continue to move forward addressing your concerns, it is all too often that administrations change from year to year and they are not as strong as they could be. Our goal is to leave this organization and the next administration a little stronger than when we found it so that the next group of leaders can carry the torch.

Scope

We provide a number of services and outlets whose goals are to provide optimum support for the student body. We support many campus events and activities through organizational funding. Funding is allocated to various organizations on campus that range from groups dedicated to providing art outlets and education on expression to groups that decide to form a rugby team or a hockey team, many different groups are on our campus.
