Hi Huskie!
Can you believe we’ll be staring down final exams a month from now? And this week, registration is open for the spring term!
Your team at NIU is fully behind you as you push through the midsemester stress. From our experts in education, here are ten steps toward being a successful college student:
- Go to class! “Being successful requires consistent work, and going to class lays the foundation for that.” — Laurie Elish-Piper, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education
- Read your emails. My newsletters and the Weekly Scroll a good start, but you should browse your inbox daily so you don’t miss important information from NIU.
- Meet with your advisor. “Your advisor will foster your curiosity and help you explore a fulfilling future.” — Beth Ingram, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost
- Utilize academic resources. “The Huskie Academic Support Center is here because we all need guidance as we write, study and simply learn. The sooner, the better.” — Nichole Knutson, Ph.D, associate vice provost for student success
- Build involvement on campus. Do more than go to class, and show up for your life! NIU has a lot to offer you — student orgs, activities and places to study, relax and eat.
- Seek advice from Career Services. “Hoping to get a good job after college? You can start preparing now by making an appointment with a career advisor.” — Dr. Ingram
- Attend your professors’ office hours. “We have office hours on purpose — our careers are dedicated to student success. You are the priority.” — Dr. Elish-Piper
- Make caring connections with Huskies. I say setting aside time for friendship and fun is an absolute must, whether you’re being active in a student-led group or grabbing FREE tickets to a Jesse McCartney concert at the Egyptian.
- Be well and reach out for personal support. — “Huskies care about themselves and each other. But that doesn’t mean you have to hold the world on your shoulders.” — Dr. Ingram
- Pay attention to deadlines and requirements. “The roadmap to your degree is a calendar. Doing things like enrolling on time ensures you’ll get the classes you need.” — Dr. Knutson
Have a question or concern? You can always reach out by replying to this email, or call the Center for Student Assistance at 815-753-8300.
Go Huskies!
