Hello Huskies,
Halloween is a time to share tricks or treats with friends and family — along with your most creative or scary costumes.
No matter your plans, do your part to Protect the Pack by wearing a mask and avoiding large gatherings. Use the NIU Safe app, especially if you’ll be out at night.
There’s a whole week of Well-o-Ween activities from Student Wellness, and highlights happening this weekend around the Holmes Student Center include a live concert on Friday and a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt on Saturday starting at MLK Commons.
This fun holiday should not become an opportunity, however, to reinforce stereotypes or appropriate someone’s identity. The cultural appropriation of racial and ethnic identities as well as sex, gender identity and other protected identities is harmful and problematic because of the history of discrimination and oppression of marginalized people. Think before you choose a costume that is hurtful to others.
Please choose wisely when dressing up, enjoy yourself with the week’s festivities, and make responsible choices for your health and security.
Happy Halloween!
Vernese Edghill-Walden, Ph.D.
