Hi Huskie!
We’re more than halfway into the semester. Have you made your home here yet? Many students, especially first-time college students, will wait a few months to explore beyond the classroom. Hint — you don’t have to wait! You can still get involved this fall, and I encourage you to do so now, before you register for the spring term.
There’s so much to do at NIU on top of going to classes. Here are just a few options to consider.
Join Something! Whether you want to lead, learn or lean in, there’s a student group made for you.
These student groups are the heartbeat of our Huskie pack, and signing up just might be the highlight of your time here at NIU!
Hang Out at the Homes Student Center (HSC) Consider the recently renovated Holmes Student Center your massive campus living room. Its most popular destination is the bright, inviting 8,000-square-foot lounge on the ground floor.
A revitalized bookstore and new eateries, including grab-and-go, café and dine-in options — are highlights of this modern space. Have fun with friends in front of the HSC fireplace or around the pool tables in the Huskie Den, reserve a quiet room to study, or shop for food and supplies.
Have a Bite to Eat If you come to campus hungry, you can find just about anything you’d like to eat here! Some recent popular additions include a full-service Starbucks and QDOBA Mexican Eats in the HSC. You can pick up food to go, dine in or even skip the line by ordering ahead with GrubHub. Learn more on our where to eat page.
Enjoy an Event Did you miss our popular reprise of A Night at Holmes at the beginning of October? The next installment of this semester series will be Friday, Nov. 12 at the HSC.
In the meantime, the NIU calendar is full of fall events at the student center and across campus. You’ll find the HSC is the epicenter of all these happenings, with movie and open mic nights, karaoke, tournaments and contests, crafts and more fun activities.
Did you know that students who are involved in an opportunity outside of the classroom are more likely to succeed, both in college and beyond? It’s true. This could be a campus job, a research project with a faculty member, joining a club, being a member of a fraternity or sorority, and so much more.
At NIU, you’ll always find a place where you belong. Hope to see you around soon.
Go Huskies!
