Hello, Huskie families!
With fall finals less than a month away and registration open for spring, it's time to check in and see how your student is doing.
Please make sure they are participating academically, planning for spring and also reaching out for assistance whenever they need it.
Last week, we shared 10 tips to help your Huskie be a successful college student:
-
Go to class! Nothing is more important than showing up where the learning is happening, and it's the top factor for earning good grades! Even missing one class can set your Huskie behind.
-
Read emails. The weeks you aren't hearing from me, your student is receiving a Huskie Connections newsletter. Another regular resource is the Weekly Scroll of things to know on Mondays.
-
Meet with your advisor. Does your student know who their advisor is? The Academic Advising Center provides Huskies and their families with a bridge between their studies and their future career.
-
Utilize academic resources. The Huskie Academic Support Center offers your Huskie tutoring on any course, help with writing assignments and even appointments for coaching on academic skills.
-
Build involvement on campus. Students who engage in campus life are more likely to complete their degrees. It's easy to get involved at NIU through events, activities, student organizations and much more.
-
Seek advice from Career Services. Does your Huskie have a post-graduation plan? They can make an appointment for a career checkup, advising, mock interview, and even help with LinkedIn and their resume.
-
Attend professors' office hours. Every class syllabus has a section dedicated to times for faculty members to meet with students. Dropping in for this individual guidance from professors makes a difference.
-
Make caring connections with Huskies. Down time for fun and friends is almost as important as working hard, attending class and studying diligently. The NIU events calendar is full of opportunities for your student to recharge.
-
Be well and reach out for personal support. Our caring staff in Counseling and Consultation Services and Student Wellness are here to make sure Huskies have what they need to be the best version of themselves.
-
Pay attention to deadlines and requirements. Keeping an eye on the academic calendar will ensure your student doesn't miss important dates each semester, so they stay on track to graduate on time.
NIU is always here for you and your Huskie. Just reply to this email for one-on-one attention to any concern, or call the Center for Student Assistance at 815-753-8300.
Go Huskies!
