Hello, Huskie families!
NIU transitioned fully to in-person classes this week. University leadership will update students if the positivity rate from on-campus surveillance testing rises above 8%.
With the most recent rate slightly more than half that threshold at 4.48%, we are cautiously optimistic. It's up to all Huskies to stay vigilant, follow guidance and do their part in Protecting the Pack.
Please get in touch with your student and make sure they're checking their email. When you check in, pass along the resources below so they can make the most of this year.

Life outside the classroom
|
|
College is about more than going to class, and at NIU your student has endless outlets for development and fun. They can explore all of these options in one place with an Involvement Fair Wednesday, Feb. 2:
Because students don't always make the most of campus opportunities their first semester, I want you to know it's never too early – or late – to explore an outlet, along with service and leadership opportunities.
If your Huskie hasn't spent much downtime on campus yet, a perfect opportunity is the first installment of one of NIU's most popular series of events each semester – A Night at Holmes. This term's kickoff is 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, and will offer photo ops, fun, prizes and new activities like escape rooms!

A successful start to spring
|
|
All Huskies have an academic advisor assigned to them to help them stay on track in the classroom. Please encourage your student to also use professors' office hours, and never be afraid to ask questions.
Additionally, they can visit the Huskie Academic Support Center virtually to make an appointment for tutoring, help with writing or research, and skills coaching on studying, test taking, or time management.
Bookmark NIU's academic calendar to help your Huskie stay on top of deadlines for spring 2022. For an extra set of eyes on what they need to know, consider delegating shared access in their MyNIU account.

Planning ahead for a career
|
|
At every step of their academic journey, Huskies should be thinking about their professional paths. Your student can prepare for a great job by contacting Career Services early in their time at NIU.
Has your Huskie ever taken advantage of this complimentary perk? Check out their menu of services. Students can schedule an appointment for a variety of advising options, including:
-
A 25-minute career checkup, required for UNIV 101/201 students but helpful for all Huskies.
-
More in-depth career advising – a comprehensive longer session customized by your student.
-
A LinkedIn profile review in Microsoft Teams for feedback and assistance with their account.
-
Help practicing for a job search with a mock interview, and even more interview resources online.
-
A virtual résumé review set for 20 minutes, as well as workshops and examples of résumés.
-
A library of self-guided online resources, including a career pathway dashboard and learning lab.
-
Frequent career/internship fairs, along with a directory of jobs through Huskies Get Hired.
I'll be in touch with you again in February, but in the meantime, my team is always available to you!
If you ever have questions or concerns, reach out to the Center for Student Assistance at NIU. You can call 815-753-8300 or email studentassistance@niu.edu.
Go Huskies!
