Are you attending NIU on any scholarships?
Yes, the Northern Academic Scholarship, the Kiwanis of Rockford Scholarship, the Harlem Music Boosters Scholarship, the Deloris Gregory Pourchot Scholarship, the Neptune Memorial Scholarship, the College of Health & Human Sciences Scholarship and the Kohl’s Outstanding Student Project Award.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I learned about NIU because my brother attended here. I chose to attend here because it was affordable and close to home (while still being far enough), and it gave me the opportunities I wished to pursue.
Do you have any favorite activities or events at NIU?
I really enjoy the NIU tailgate and football games. It’s so much fun to hang out with my friends and support my school. In my spare time, I am a part of the NIU Fashion Industries Organization and love to hang out with my friends.
What do you like about campus and the DeKalb area?
NIU's campus is very nice, and I like that they remodeled the Student Center to bring in more things for students to do. I think the DeKalb area is pretty nice, too, with good shopping areas and restaurants. Plus, it’s close to Chicago so you can easily go downtown.
What has your experience inside the classroom been like at NIU?
My classroom experience at NIU has been really great. I love all of my fashion professors because they support us and give us professional opportunities for the future.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
I think the many networking opportunities, such as the Involvement Fair, Career/Internship Fair and Fashion Networking Panels, have helped me grow my confidence. This is really important after college because you will always have to network with employers and your coworkers, present projects and findings and be a confident speaker.
Would you recommend NIU to others and why?
Yes, I would because it is a really great college. I think the best piece of advice I could give someone is to not let anything or anyone hold you back. If you want to go into a degree that is hard, move away or take a few risks, then you definitely should. College is the perfect time for you to grow as an individual and find who you are!
