Hometown: McHenry, IL
Major: Elementary Education
What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
Elementary education with a special education emphasis; I chose El Ed because I love working with children and I hope to inspire them to follow their dreams and be anything that they want. Children are so creative and energetic. I want to help express that in the classroom.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I learned about NIU from a presentation at my high school. I chose to attend because when I visited the campus felt like home and NIU is also close to my home so I can come back when I need to.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
Exploring and witnessing different cultures and races. I want to be an educator, so it is important that I am exposed to diversity. My future students will come from different backgrounds.
Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
Yes, because NIU is so welcoming. Students are allowed to express themselves here and not feel judged. There are so many organizations and clubs to get involved with. There are academic research opportunities to explore. There is something for every student to enjoy and find an interest in. My general piece of advice is do not be afraid to explore and get out of your comfort zone. College is all about opportunities to advance in your field of study and making memories with your friends.
What is up next for you after your time at NIU?
I want to become an elementary education teacher at the elementary school that I attended.
