Are you attending NIU on any scholarships?
Yes, an NIU Scholars Merit Scholarship.
What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
My major is electrical engineering with an emphasis in computer engineering. I chose this field due to my love of mathematics and science, my fascination with computers and other electronics, and my desire to be an innovator.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I learned about NIU when I was searching for universities closer to home, and I chose to attend for two reasons. First of all, the scholarships NIU has to offer are really generous and widely available in comparison to other universities. Secondly, during my campus visit I discovered that the people were so kind and passionate. This was the most attractive thing about the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology to me. I found that everyone I spoke to was truly eager to learn, innovate, and apply their knowledge. The upperclassmen I met were kind and continue to support me in my academic and professional career to this day.
Do you have any favorite activities or events at NIU? What else do you do for fun in your spare time?
My favorite campus activity is CRU, a Christian ministry here on campus. It's full of wonderful people, and I've made so many friends and memories at CRU. In my spare time, I love to play guitar, and eat Chipotle and Chick-fil-A with my beautiful fiancée, MaKayla.
What do you like about campus and the DeKalb area?
The DeKalb area has a small and homey feel to it. Everyone here is so kind, and making friends is so easy. Coming into my freshmen year I was able to make so many friends and lasting relationships. The only thing that DeKalb has more than corn is cool people.
What has your experience inside the classroom been like at NIU?
My experience in class has been great. Professors are fair and are eager to answer student questions.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
Besides all of the course material I've learned how important going the extra mile is, and how key kindness is to your life. Everyone at NIU is incredibly kind and respectful. I know that working my hardest and acting with respect and dignity will take me far in my field.
What is up next for you after your time at NIU? Any plans you would like to share?
I am currently looking to pursue a career as an electrical hardware design engineer in the aerospace and defense industry.
Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
I would recommend NIU in a heartbeat. This is a school where you don't just get lost in the shuffle. If you act with respect and work as hard as possible, you're going to succeed and make friends no matter what. For those of you who are just about to start college, remember this: You can be the best at any given thing you put your mind to. It sounds cliché, but never let anyone else tell you otherwise. Set your goals impossibly high, and work as hard as you can. You'll go far!
