Hometown: Rochelle, IL

Major: Violin Performance

She applied to seven different universities, but music major Chantel Davis chose NIU for one of the best reasons of all: “I felt like I would be able to make this my home,” she said. Davis has a head start in that regard. She has been playing violin and taking lessons for nine years with the NIU Community School of the Arts (CSA), an outreach program in the NIU College of Visual and Performing Arts. Davis hopes to teach private lessons through the CSA program herself. Meanwhile, she is enjoying campus life, making friends at Neptune North and working at Huskie Books & Gear. Her career aspirations include becoming a Suzuki-certified instructor, teaching at the college level, and performing in a major symphony orchestra. She’s already got some great advice for students. “Everything is what you make of it. If something isn’t going the way you want it to, take something positive from the situation. If you are in a class or playing a piece you don’t like, you have to think, ‘how is this enhancing my future?’ otherwise, it is a frustrating situation and you are not growing.”
