Tobacco, Alcohol, Cannabis and Other Drugs

Northern Illinois University provides and maintains an optimally healthy and safe working and living environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Tobacco-free

In accordance with the Smoke-Free Campus Act, which prohibits smoking on all Illinois state-supported higher education institutions including public university and community college campuses, NIU became tobacco-free on July 1, 2015.

Cannabis-free

Despite changes in state laws, it will remain unlawful to possess, use or sell cannabis in any form on the NIU campus. Because NIU receives funding from the federal government, we must abide by the rules in the Drug Free Schools Act and the Drug Free Workplace Act, which means that possessing or using cannabis on campus will remain illegal.

Free of Other Drugs

The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act also covers regulations to provide a drug free environment on college campuses. NIU supports an environment where academics and research are forefront, and compliance with this act is central to those efforts.
