Students with mpox are encouraged to return to their permanent residence when possible to receive the appropriate care and support during what will be a prolonged period of isolation. The university will work to find safe and alternative accommodations for students unable to return to their permanent residences.
Students should schedule appointments at the Northwestern Medicine Student Health Center at NIU by calling 815-306-2777 or can contact their personal providers. Please do not arrive to the Health Center without an appointment. Students must notify the university if they have tested and are awaiting results, or if they have received positive results, in order to receive academic accommodations and/or housing support. Students can do this by completing NIU’s Mpox Notification Form on the Protecting the Pack site.
At this time, there is limited access to the mpox vaccine across the nation. If someone is determined to be a close contact to an mpox patient, the local health department will provide that person with information about accessing the vaccine.
Discrimination or harassment in any form is unacceptable. Anyone experiencing discrimination or harassment is asked to immediately report it to the university using our online Bias Incident Reporting form.
The CDC has accurate, useful and up-to-date information on mpox on its website. Students also can make appointments at the Northwestern Medicine Student Health Center at NIU by calling 815-306-2777.
