New COVID-19 monitoring system installed
Sept. 14, 2022
Black boxes appearing outside of residence halls this week are part of ongoing efforts to protect the NIU community from COVID-19.
Each sample collection box is equipped with a pump that draws samples from sewer lines and stores them in a secure container inside – hence the biohazard warnings on the boxes. Those samples are tested for the presence of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. By testing wastewater from each residence hall, the university will be able to detect outbreaks within specific communities and to take appropriate steps to manage the situation.
