A message from President Freeman regarding August commencement
June 2, 2020

Dear Graduates,

While it was our sincere hope that we all would be able to gather in August to celebrate the completion of your journeys here at Northern Illinois University, that will not be possible.

Unfortunately, the number of graduates and guests at a commencement celebration would exceed that allowed at any gathering under the public health guidance developed by state and local health officials. While we want to acknowledge your accomplishments, our top priority remains the health and well-being of you, your family and friends, and we feel this is the most responsible decision at this time.

The university is exploring a number of options for a virtual or in-person ceremony at some future date, and we are interested in your feedback. Accordingly, we would very much appreciate you taking the time to complete this brief NIU Commencement Survey.  The information you provide will help guide our decisions moving forward. Please share your thoughts by the close of business Wednesday, June 10.

Regardless of future plans, all students who completed the requirements for their degrees at the conclusion of the spring semester, and those who will do so this summer, will have the following items mailed to their home addresses: a diploma, a diploma cover, a graduation tassel and two copies of the program that would have been distributed at the August commencement ceremony. Those items will be mailed to the permanent address you have listed in your MyNIU account, so please adjust that information if necessary. For additional information on how those items will be distributed, please see the FAQ on the NIU Commencement website.

If you wish to commemorate this milestone in your life with photographs in the traditional regalia, we will also mail a cap and gown to your home at no cost. Orders can be placed through https://niu.shopoakhalli.com and must be submitted no later than June 30.

While the usual pomp and circumstance surrounding your graduation has been delayed, please know that it in no way diminishes your accomplishments. I hope that you are still feeling tremendous pride for having completed the requirements for, and earning, your degree. All of us at NIU are extraordinarily proud of you.

I will be in touch again when we have decided how to proceed with commencement celebrations.

Forward Together,

Lisa C. Freeman
President
