Faculty and staff update re: messaging to returning students about current plans for the fall semester

May 19, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff,

A short while ago, we sent the message below to returning students about our current plans for the fall semester. A similar message has been shared with our admitted students, and further communications are planned for prospective students and other important audiences.

President Freeman also shared important information today about new funding available to returning students through the CARES Act and Student Emergency Fund. This communication and more are all available for your reference on the NIU COVID-19 Updates site.

We will continue to keep you updated on the progress being made and, as always, we appreciate your patience as our university works to create a new path forward.

Thank you,

Beth Ingram

Message to returning students

Dear Students,

I hope you are enjoying the start of your summer break. I wanted to check in with you and let you know that we’re making progress on our fall plans and other important considerations we need to make to protect the health and well-being of our entire NIU community.

University experts in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Housing and Residential Services, Campus Dining, Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, NIU’s Northwestern Medicine Health Center and more are working collaboratively to develop programming and resources to support you while respecting the need to follow appropriate physical distancing measures. While we know that the start of the fall semester will need to look different from last year, we are very committed to making sure that it’s still a personalized, engaging and inclusive experience.

For the fall, your schedule will likely include courses taught in-person, some courses taught online and some courses that combine those delivery methods. In-person classes will be kept smaller, and scheduled to allow for physical distancing and proper sanitization. We’re working through the details now, and more information about classes and any schedule changes will be provided to you in the coming weeks. After you have received the information, it will be important for you to connect with your advisor to understand your options or make any necessary changes.

For those planning to live on campus, we are working to provide each student with an individual room for the 2020-21 academic year in residence halls that provide the best layouts for social distancing and student health. Specific information about pricing, hall selections, dining and student fees will be sent to you the week of June 22. For those who submitted roommate requests, we will work to assign you on the same floor wherever possible. Please see the FAQs on the Housing website and contact our housing staff at for specific questions not addressed in the FAQ.

NIU is grateful for your patience as we all define a new path forward. We’re committed to keeping you informed and look forward to helping each of you succeed.

Together Forward,

Beth Ingram

Executive Vice President and Provost
