Payroll Information for Employees

Dear Faculty, Staff and Student Employees,

I appreciate the significant efforts all of you have made to support university operations during this trying and uncertain time gripping our world. Despite the daily challenges that arise, I’m incredibly proud of the collaboration and ingenuity I see happening across every unit of the university. Huskies are working together so that we can deliver on the promises we have made in academics, research, artistry, engagement and more. Your commitment and resolve are nothing short of remarkable.

Gov. Pritzker’s Stay-at-Home Executive Order is now in effect to help save lives and reduce the spread of COVID-19 cases here in Illinois. Universities have a limited exception for purposes of facilitating distance learning, and performing critical research or essential functions, provided that social distancing is maintained. Honoring the letter and intent of this critical directive has caused us to pare down the number of employees working on campus. As I shared in my note Friday evening, NIU remains committed to ensuring that our employees continue to receive pay and benefits during this time.

For our student employees, ending most of the undergraduate employment was a difficult decision
. In considering what was best for students, we understood that protecting student health and public safety by limiting student employment would cause financial hardship. We also recognized not all student work can be done remotely – and we want to help bridge these gaps. To this end, undergraduate student employees who actively worked between January 16, 2020, and March 8, 2020, will automatically be paid one-time stipends Wednesday, April 15, to cover the remainder of the semester. For undergraduate students who continue to do pre-approved grant-sponsored work, remote tutoring or on-campus work in residence halls and in dining, you also will receive the stipend in addition to your hourly wages.

For our faculty and staff, you will continue to receive pay and benefits during this time. As we move forward in an ever-changing environment, Human Resources Services will provide updated biweekly payroll guidance as necessary to supervisors in alignment with the most recent developments and guidance from the state. I encourage you to continue to please refer to the HRS website for information and updates. The sites also include numerous resources to help you stay informed and prepared.

Thank you again for your incredible hard work and dedication to our Huskie family.

Together Forward,

Lisa C. Freeman
