Commencement Plans for the Class of 2021
March 11, 2021

Greetings Class of 2021,

We are delighted to inform you that planning is underway for in-person spring commencement ceremonies during the weekend of June 4-6.

While details are being finalized, the outlines of the plan are as follows:

Friday, June 4, 2021

  • Graduate Commencement (Specialists, Master’s and Performer’s Certificates only)

Saturday, June 5, 2021

  • Ceremony 1: College of Education, College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, and College of Visual and Performing Arts

Sunday, June 6, 2021

  • Ceremony 1: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • Ceremony 2: College of Business and College of Health and Human Sciences

We know how important this day is to all of you, and we are working hard to make it as joyous and safe as possible. Accomplishing these goals will require some alterations to our usual commencement blueprint.

First, under a plan developed in consultation with the DeKalb County Health Department, all ceremonies will take place outdoors at Huskie Stadium because outdoor events significantly reduce chances of spreading COVID-19. This change prompted the decision to move the ceremonies into June, when fair weather is more likely. Note: The ceremonies will be held rain or shine. In the event of dangerous weather, the ceremonies will be cancelled, and there are currently no plans to schedule a backup date.

To ensure proper physical distancing, graduates will be provided with one (1) ticket for themselves (required for entrance) and two (2) tickets to share with attendees of their choice. This limit will be strictly enforced. To accommodate friends and family who cannot attend, these events will be livestreamed.

Please note that all of these plans are contingent upon whatever state COVID-19 regulations for public gatherings are in effect June 4-6.

Information about registration, ceremony times, how to obtain tickets and the ordering of caps and gowns will be available soon. We will email you and post that information on the NIU Commencement website as decisions are made.

Go Huskies!
