Safe Passage Prevention Collaboration

Safe Passage, Dekalb County's domestic violence and sexual assault crisis center, collaborates with NIU on prevention activities and beyond. Safe Passage offers free, 24/7, and confidential services to students, faculty, staff, and community members. All services are completely free and confidential and they can respond to your needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week both on campus or off campus. Safe Passage can meet you where your are both physically and emotionally.

Safe Passage has medical advocates that will meet you at the hospital for support and assistance. They offer legal advocacy services that can help you obtain Orders of Protection and support through any court proceedings. Residential advocates can help individuals navigate social services like public aid, housing and child care.

Safe Passage staff and volunteers have been a part of campus fairs, tabling, sexual assault awareness month events, domestic violence awareness month events, Start by Believing campaign presentations and many more prevention efforts.

Beyond prevention work, Safe Passage supports the NIU community as confidential advisors, offering support and counseling to those in need. NIU is committed to creating safe and healthy communities and this collaboration is vital and will continue to strengthen.
