Northern Illinois University strives for diversity in sources of education and training among the faculty of each academic program, in order to enhance the intellectual vigor of the university's academic disciplines through scholarly perspectives and expertise gained from a variety of appropriate institutional contexts.
Ordinarily, a regular faculty appointment will not be offered to a candidate whose relevant terminal degree is from Northern Illinois University unless the candidate is fully qualified for the position and has obtained substantial pertinent educational or professional experience in another institution or organization subsequent to obtaining that degree.
In exceptional circumstances appointments of recent NIU graduates that enhance the quality and/or diversity of the department, college, or university may be made upon written approval of the dean, or the director of University Libraries, and the provost.
