Purpose

Insects and small animals such as mice, birds, and chipmunks that are found uncontained inside campus buildings are considered a nuisance. Other larger animals such as squirrels, bats, skunks, groundhogs and raccoons can cause considerable damage and in some cases pose a threat to the residents. Therefore, Environmental Health & Safety has developed this procedure to outline the responsibilities and steps for proper animal and pest control on campus and within campus buildings.

Procedure

For insect and mouse intrusion the university has contracted the professional services of Chem-Wise Ecological Pest Management. Under the standard contract Chem-Wise will treat both interior and exterior for insects and mice. Treating/fogging for mosquitoes is outside of the general contract and there will be an extra fee for services usually charged to the requesting department. Removal/trapping of chipmunks is also outside of the general contract.

The Grounds Department will trap and remove nuisance birds, chipmunks, squirrels, groundhogs and raccoons from outdoor spaces. The Grounds Department also addresses issues with geese and removal of dead animals from NIU property. However, the Grounds Department has limited resources and may contact other university, county or professional services as necessary.

DeKalb County Animal control will remove birds, bats, squirrels, skunks, groundhogs and raccoons from indoor and outdoor spaces if it is deemed that the animal is sick, injured or poses a danger to people. This service is provided at no cost to the university. Contact with this department will be made by NIU Public Safety or the Grounds Department.

NIU also maintains contact with a licensed professional animal control service that will trap and remove birds, bats, squirrels, skunks, groundhogs and raccoons from indoor and outdoor spaces. There are fees associated with each removal and/or consultation. Contact with this company will be through EH&S, NIU Public Safety or the Grounds Department.

If it is determined that the intrusion of the animal has been encouraged by the residents of the building, i.e. feeding, harboring, etc., the department requesting removal services will be responsible for payment of any fees required for professional services.
