In an institution known for the often well-known personalities it puts on stage, the NIU School of Music finds its true “public face” in Lynn Slater.

Slater, the school's coordinator of admissions since 1995, coordinates recruiting and outreach activities, which include two major off-campus conferences, four formal audition days, university open house days, School of Music events and even handling press releases and the monthly newsletter.

She is the first contact with prospective music majors and their parents, personally inviting them to campus for visits, giving tours of the music facilities, arranging meetings or private lessons with faculty and then sitting down to discuss programs and admission procedures.

Her service comes with a smile – and patience.

“As a musician and parent herself, she understands their concerns,” said Charles T. (Tim) Blickhan, assistant director, “and she does this for several hundred interested students each year.”

NIU's annual – and legendary – reception for music alumni at the Illinois Music Educators Association conference has enhanced Slater's reputation, so much so that the University of Illinois asked Slater to share her secrets to success.

“This year the U. of I. tried to copy NIU,” NIU School of Music Director Paul Bauer said, “but something is missing. They do not have Lynn Slater's leadership and commitment.”
