Joyce Chaney

Joyce Chaney knows the name of every one she serves – impressive, considering her “clientele” number 1,400.

“She is probably the only person in Student Housing and Dining Services who knows the name of all our employees,” said one member of the coordinating team for SHDS, where Chaney is the human resource officer, “and often knows something about them as well. Joyce is also a confidant to many. All are welcome in her office. It is not unusual to see students or staff members speaking with Joyce well after office hours are over for the day. She is an effective listener who is not afraid to provide a ‘kick in the pants' when it is needed.”

Chaney serves a wide variety of employees, from the executive director, area coordinators and food administrators to typists, cooks, kitchen helpers and other student workers.

She processes new hires and transfers, provides direction, information and assistance for professional development and staff training, serves on the negotiating team for union contracts and strongly advocates for employee rights, a diverse workforce and non-discrimination issues.

Chaney also volunteered many years on the DeKalb School District 's Citizen Advisory Committee and as regional registrar for the DeKalb-area American Youth Soccer Organization, which serves about 1,000 boys and girls, while spending many Saturdays at the field supporting her children's teams.
