The Office of the Ombudsperson serves as a neutral third party for sharing questions and concerns about your NIU experience. The ombudsperson, or ombuds, offers a non-judgmental, impartial perspective to help you navigate university systems and resources. We can also help you develop communication skills and identify ways to address your concerns. You’ll be empowered to choose your own path to resolution.
We adhere to the Standards of Practice (PDF) and Code of Ethics (PDF) of the International Ombudsman Association (IOA).
Our Principles
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is essential to our work. We won’t disclose information you share without your permission, except when there may be an imminent risk of harm to you or another person, or when required by law. We don’t maintain records that identify visitors to our office.
Impartiality
An ombuds doesn’t take sides. We don’t have any formal decision-making capability, nor do we conduct investigations or change policies or procedures. However, we do advocate for productive communication and fair processes.
Independence
Except for administrative and budgetary purposes, our office functions outside NIU’s departmental structure.
Informality
We do not:
- Record or act on any notice of complaint.
- Conduct formal investigations or participate in formal actions, such as testifying.
- Offer legal advice or psychological services.
We can tell you how to file a formal complaint, if desired. We can also direct you to other NIU resources.
