What is Family Weekend?

Family Weekend is a chance for family members to visit and experience NIU with their student. In collaboration with the DeKalb and surrounding communities, NIU presents programming and activities for family members of all ages. We hope you’ll join us this September 14-16!

Who can attend Family Weekend?

Family Weekend is open to all families and community members! We invite parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sibling, alumni and friends to come to campus and enjoy all of our scheduled events.

How does the schedule work?

Each family’s itinerary for Family Weekend may vary! We do our best to host a variety of events that will appeal to a wide array of interests, so there may be some events scheduled with overlapping start times. It is up to you and your family to decide what activities you participate in.

Many Family Weekend events do not require any pre-registration and are free. Make sure to review the Family Weekend schedule to learn more.

Where do I register?

You will register for the Bag Toss Tournament through the Family Weekend Registration. Tickets for the Family Weekend football game and many of the other events can be purchased through the links provided in the “Event Details” section of the schedule. On-site registration may be available for some events—be sure to ask at check-in if you would like to register for last minute event tickets.

What do we do when we first get to campus and how do we meet up with our student?

Family Weekend Check-in is a great place to meet up with your student.Depending on what day you plan to arrive on campus, you can either meet at the Holmes Student Center on Friday night before heading to see the free movie in the Holmes Student Center or on Saturday at “The Yard” as you prepare to cheer on the Huskies as they play the Central Michigan Chippewas.

All families who have made payments through the Family Weekend registration for the Bag Toss Tournament must check-in to receive their tickets.

Can my student pick up my registration materials?

Yes, students are welcome to check-in for their families. Check-in will take place on Friday, September 14, in the Holmes Student Center, Gallery Lounge from 4-7 p.m. and at “The Yard” on Saturday, September 15 before the football game. Registration materials will only be available during the scheduled check-in times.

How can I purchase tickets to the Family Weekend football game?

NIU students can attend all home football games free by showing their OneCard at any of the gates on the East Side of Huskie Stadium for east side GA seating (student section).

Additional Family Weekend football game tickets for family members to sit with your NIU students on the east side of Huskie Stadium are available online at a discounted rate of only $15 per ticket. The discounted rate football game tickets are good for Huskie Stadium east side GA seating ONLY (student section) and available until Thursday, Sept. 13, with promo code: FAMILY. Purchase your additional football game tickets.

If NIU students and family members wish to sit on the west side of Huskie Stadium in reserved seating, each guest (including the student) must Purchase football game tickets online or by calling the NIU Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225). West side reserved tickets are $30 per ticket for the Family Weekend – Central Michigan game Sept. 15.

What side of the stadium should I sit on?

Families are welcome to sit on either side of the stadium; however, pricing for the east side and west side of the stadium will vary.If you would like to enjoy the game with your student, we recommend purchasing tickets for east side seating.  Tickets for east side seating are in the student section. If your family would prefer not to sit in the student section, you will need to purchase your tickets for the west side of the stadium. 

What should I expect during family tailgate and at the football game?

Many people come out to show their Huskie spirit at NIU football games! You can expect there to be tailgating for the football game. Tailgating happens on either side of the stadium You’ll find the official Family Weekend tailgate on the west side of the stadium. We’ll be in what’s called, “The Yard.” Due to the high amount of people that attend tailgating and football games, make sure to plan extra time and patience for parking and walking.

What can I expect at the tailgate?

Enjoy a family-oriented tailgate experience at “The Yard.” Stop by the Orientation and Family Connections tent to cheer on families participating in the Bag Toss Tournament or grab a bite to eat from a vendor.  Food and drink will be for purchase at various locations in “The Yard”. There will also be a huge TV screen and a “kids zone” with plenty of activities.

Are refunds available?

The deadline for refunds is Monday, September 3 by 4 p.m. Please email to request a refund. Orientation and Family Connections will not honor any refunds requested after Monday, September 3, 2018.

Are tickets needed for every event?

No, tickets are not needed for all events. However, some events have an additional fee and/or require a ticket to participate. Make sure to check the schedule to check for event pricing and registration details. If your family registers for the Family Weekend Bag Toss Tournament, we’ll send you a confirmation e-mail. You’ll be able to pick up your tickets at Family Weekend check-in.

Can I pay at the door for events?

For events with a cost, we recommend paying ahead of time since space is limited.
