Quarantine: The Summer Camp
Learn the STEM. Live the Book. Meet the Authors.
Join STEM Read for a terrifyingly educational camp based on Quarantine: The Loners by Lex Thomas. We’ll enter the world of McKinley High School where students are quarantined because a biological weapon made them fatally poisonous to the outside world. With no teachers, no rules and no cure, the students divide into tribes based on their social cliques. Roving bands of jocks, nerds, skaters, cheerleaders and theater students barter, trade and battle for limited resources.
Throughout the week, you’ll visit labs across campus and work with STEM experts to explore life in different tribes. You’ll work collaboratively to solve hands-on challenges related to microbiology, human health, disaster management, costume design, engineering, economics and more. You’ll also explore creative writing as you create Quarantine stories of your own. At the end of the week, you’ll meet Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies, the authors of Quarantine, and participate in a final game to gather resources, fight for survival and find out which tribe really rules the school.
All campers will receive a copy of Quarantine: The Loners when they complete registration.

It’s Lord of the Flies meets The Breakfast Club and all bets are off!
It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High — until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning.
A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you’re as good as dead. And David has no gang. It’s just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.
In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, a 2012 Booklist Editor’s Choice, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don’t fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.
