Bachelor of Music degree options for keyboard majors include performance, music education, jazz studies, composition, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music. Master of Music programs are available in performance, the individualized specialization (which includes jazz studies) and music education. We also offer the post-master's Performer's Certificate. Students can study piano, organ, and/or harpsichord.
Applied keyboard instruction is provided in a variety of individual and group settings taught by School of Music faculty. In addition to several chamber groups featuring keyboard instruments, students may be assigned as a member of the NIU Philharmonic, Concert or Chamber Choir, Wind Ensemble, and Wind Symphony. Keyboard majors also participate as accompanists for instrumental and vocal music majors each semester. The NIU School of Music has several opportunities for jazz performance, and these ensembles are available to any student by way of audition.
Pianos in the School of Music include instruments by Fazioli (model F278, 9'), NY Steinway (9'), Hamburg Steinway (model C), and Grotian (model 225). Many of the practice rooms have Steinway grand pianos.
There are two Hubbard type double-manual harpsichords, one at A=440 (equal temperament) and the other at A=415 (Valotti/Young temperament, mildly unequal).
Boutell Memorial Concert Hall is the site of a magnificent organ by Martin Ott. Installed in 1983, it remains incomplete. Practice organs are by Flentrop and Zimmer.
