Welcome to the Northern Illinois University School of Music! Our mission is to provide a strong foundation for professional careers in music through a wide range of artistic and academic opportunities. We invite you to visit us in person, especially to attend one of our 200 performances each year, and we hope that you will visit our site often.
NIU offers the B.M. degree with a variety of areas of study (Performance, including jazz and steelpan; Music Education; and Composition) and a B.A. degree. Graduate students can pursue the M.M. in one of three specializations: Performance, Music Education, or Individualized. Individualized areas of study include recording arts, composition, and world music. We also offer the Performer’s Certificate.
NIU students participate in an array of award-winning instrumental and vocal ensembles, and many also take part in world music performance. Our ensembles include choirs, orchestra, concert and marching bands, large and small jazz ensembles, steelbands, new music ensemble, percussion ensemble, Javanese and Balinese gamelans, tabla, Chinese and Middle Eastern ensembles, and various chamber music ensembles. Each spring we stage a full opera in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, and every year we host a world music festival and a new music festival. Throughout the year we invite guest artists from the United States and beyond to perform and work with our students.
If you can't make it to our concerts in person, we invite you to watch live webcasts of our performances here on our website. We look forward to welcoming you!
