Each summer the Provost’s Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation organizes an institute on the NIU campus. In 2007, the Institute dates will be May 14 through 18. The institute is designed to facilitate discussion about multicultural issues, to provide resources for research on multicultural subjects, and to offer tenured and tenure-track faculty support for incorporating multicultural perspectives and content into their teaching. Ideally, the institute leads to curricular as well as personal transformation.
The institute format includes plenary addresses by invited scholars, presentations by NIU faculty, panel discussions, syllabi critiques, videos, and small group activities that focus on race, ethnicity, gender, social class, sexual orientation, and disabilities. During the institute, participants will be assigned to small groups led by past participants who will moderate discussions and syllabi reviews. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation signed by the Provost. Departments are encouraged to credit faculty members for their participation in the institute in their annual merit evaluations.
Application materials will be distributed to faculty early in the spring. Each year, approximately 15 applicants are selected to participate and receive a $1,000 award to support curriculum transformation projects such as developing new courses or revising existing courses. The first half of the award is distributed upon successful completion of the institute, and the last half is distributed upon submission of a written report and presentation of transformation project during the fall semester.
Remember: This year’s institute will run from May 14 to May 18. SAVE THE DATES! For more information about the institute, contact the current chair, the task force assistant, or any current member of the task force.
