The Provost’s Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation invites applications for participation in the Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute to be held on campus on May 14-18, 2007.

Eligibility: All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, instructors, and supportive professional staff at NIU are eligible to apply.  This year, applications will also be accepted from colleagues who successfully completed the Institute before 2003 and would like to repeat the experience.  Those selected to participate will receive a $1,000 stipend, $500 to be disbursed upon completion of the Institute and $500 upon submission of a final report and oral presentation in Fall 2007.  Faculty on twelve month contracts can apply, but are ineligible to receive the stipend.

Application Guidelines:

  • Name, rank and title, contract length (e.g., 9-month, 12-month, etc.) office and home addresses, office and home telephone numbers, e-mail address, and special needs (if any).
  • Abbreviated curriculum vitae.
  • A one to two page statement that explains what you hope to gain from participating in the Institute.
  • Identification of at least one course which you intend to transform based on your participation in the Institute.  Include the course number and title, average enrollment, and how often the course is offered annually.
  • Explanation of specific interests and/or subjects related to multiculturalism which you would like to explore during the Institute.
  • Identification of specific curriculum transformation outcomes that should result from participation in the Institute, and how these outcomes will be measured.
  • A letter of support from the applicant's chair or supervisor that indicates the importance of the course proposed for transformation and how often it is normally offered.

Requirements:

Institute participants are required to:

  • Attend the entire Institute and participate in all aspects of the Institute.
  • Submit fully completed evaluations of Institute events, including the final evaluation form.
  • Complete a written report and a short oral presentation on the transformed course during the Fall 2007.  Guidelines for both the written and oral reports will be distributed beforehand.

Selection Process:

All applicants will be reviewed by Task Force members and applicants will be informed of the outcome by March 2007.  Selection criteria will be based on the quality of the application, the anticipated impact of the course, and the support of the chair or supervisor.

Institute Schedule:

Daily sessions will run from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from May 14 to 18 in the Holmes Student Center.  Participants will receive readings and other materials, and lunch and refreshments will also be provided.

Stipends:

As noted above, the first $500 will be awarded upon completion of the Institute, and the remaining $500 upon completion of a written report and oral presentation in Fall 2007.

Application Deadline:

All application materials must be submitted by March 16, 2007.  They should be addressed to Professor Michael J. Gonzales, Chair, Provost's Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation, Center for Latino and Latin American Studies.  Questions about the application process can be addressed to graduate student Kimberly Reuille at (815) 753-8557 or by e-mailing Professor Gonzales at gonzales@niu.edu.
