CALL FOR PAPERS - Graduate Conference in Qualitative Inquiry

The Qualitative Inquiry Collaborative (QUIC) at Northern Illinois University will host the first Graduate Conference in Qualitative Inquiry at the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

The conference will feature keynote speaker, Elizabeth de Freitas, Professor in the Education and Social Research Institute at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK.

If interested in participating, please submit a 500-word abstract (excluding references) that addresses the following components:

1) Research question/s
2) Why qualitative inquiry is the most appropriate approach to address this question/s
3) The qualitative methodology being employed
4) The conceptual framework
5) Findings and analysis (if the study is still in the proposal stage, address methods for analysis and anticipated findings)
6) Significance of the research

Abstracts should be written in APA style. Graduate students who have their papers accepted should plan for a 14-minute presentation. While there is no conference registration fee, $10 is required to off-set the cost of the catered lunch.

Abstracts must be submitted to the QUIC by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018. Please submit proposals electronically to QUIC@niu.edu. Presenters will receive an acceptance email by Thursday, March 1, 2018.

Apply to become a UNIV 101/201 Educator for fall 2018

Interested in helping first-year students succeed at NIU? Apply to become a UNIV 101/201 Educator for fall 2018!

UNIV 101 is a one-credit academic seminar focused on helping first-year students develop the essential skills needed to transition successfully to NIU. UNIV 201 is a similar course designed specifically for transfer students.

As a UNIV 101/201 Educator, you can impact the experiences of these new students and provide them with resources to help them adjust to life at NIU.

Educators must:

  • Be full-time NIU faculty, staff or administration
  • Hold a master’s degree
  • Preferably have prior college-level teaching experience

PlePotential new educators are highly encouraged to attend an overview meeting to learn more about the position. The Educator Overview Sessions will be held:

  • Monday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. in Altgeld Hall, room 125
  • Friday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. in Altgeld Hall, room 125

UNIV 101/201 Educators typically receive a stipend of $2,000 for teaching an individual section or $1,000 for co-educating the course.

To be considered, applicants must complete the online application and submit the UNIV Supervisor Approval Form. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 23, 2018.

NIU 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Plan approved vendor campus visits

Fact or Fiction: NIU was the first school in Illinois to play a homecoming game? Attend the presentation by NIU Sports Information Director Emeritus Mike Korcek for answers to this and many other questions about the history of homecoming at NIU. Korcek has over 50 years of experience as a sport staffer, writer and editor. He is best known for his 22-year tenure at NIU as the sports information director and his 37 years as the sports information office employee (1969-70, 1973-2009). Come discover what you thought you knew about the history of homecoming. A few things may surprise you! The presentation begins 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the Staff Lounge (lower level) of Founders Memorial Library. Guests are encouraged to view the “Homecoming: 111 Years Strong” exhibit in the foyer of Founders Memorial Library following the presentation. This is a free event and open to all.
