Employment and Bar Passage

NIU Law has proven success on the Illinois bar exam and consistently strong employment statistics for each graduating class, while providing vital resources for your career placement and long-term job satisfaction.

Bar Passage Success

For the past two years NIU has been four points above the state average for first-time takers on the Illinois July Bar Exam, finishing fourth in the state in 2017. This is the result of not only a strong educational program, but also focused efforts on preparing students to pass the bar exam. These efforts include an Academic Success Program, a special Bar Fundamentals course in your final semester of school, and a post-graduation bar preparation program in the months immediately before the July bar exam.

Employment Success and Career Building Support

NIU has had consistently strong employment outcomes in recent years, with a 90% placement rate for the class of 2016. Due to the small size of our student body, the Office of Career Opportunities and Professional Development staff can provide students and alumni with more personalized insight into, and awareness of a wide-range of career options. Extensive one-on-one counseling is offered to students and alumni to help them in the selection of suitable employment opportunities. In addition to personal appointments with students, the Director of Career Opportunities assists students with resume preparation, job search strategy, and interviewing skills, equipping students and alumni as they pursue their career path.

Networking Events with Alumni and Extensive Attorney Connections

Networking opportunities are strong and plentiful due to the strong sense of camaraderie at NIU Law. Our Alumni Association is committed to actively working with current students to provide guidance, support and assistance with employment placement. The Office of Career Opportunities and Professional Development works with the Alumni Association to coordinate social receptions and speaking engagements to facilitate the networking opportunities for our students every year.
