Accelerated Law Degree Program

NIU offers an accelerated law program for high-achieving students. This unique opportunity reduces by one year the time needed for students to complete an undergraduate degree in any one of nearly a dozen disciplines—from Political Science to Engineering to Business Administration—followed by a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, thus saving both time and money.

The accelerated J.D. program, from start to finish, will typically take six years to complete instead of the normal seven.

Interested students can apply to the College of Law during their junior year. Students accepted to the accelerated J.D. program begin first-year law classes their senior year. Application requirements include:

  • Electronic Application Form
  • Personal Statement
  • LSAT Score
  • Transcript(s) and CAS Report
  • One letter of recommendation – one is required, but up to four can be received

A resume is strongly recommended, but not required. Accelerated J.D. applicants are also strongly encouraged to upload at the time of application submission a letter from their advisor indicating they have completed all major and general education requirements necessary for consideration for the accelerated J.D. program.

Merit-based scholarships and financial aid are always available for competitive applicants, including those in the accelerated J.D. program.

Both current NIU undergraduate students and transfer students are eligible to participate in the Accelerated Law Degree program.
