September 2013:  Special Events Edition, or, we're very busy on September 18!

Welcome back!  I hope you’re having a wonderful fall semester.

Here in International Programs we’re very excited about two most significant events that are both taking place on Wednesday, September 18.  I hope you and your students will be able to participate in both!

At 9:30 that morning, we invite you, your students and colleagues to join us in Altgeld Auditorium as NIU confers the honorary doctoral degree of Doctor of Humane Letters upon Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand.  As you may have seen in today’s NIUToday article,, Her Royal Highness not only holds an earned doctorate in educational development; she is also a strong proponent of educational, cultural and humanitarian efforts in Thailand.  We ask audience members to be seated in the Auditorium by 9:40 at the very latest, and we expect the ceremony, which is open to the public, to finish by 10:40 a.m.

I would be more than grateful if you could join us next Wednesday for this ceremony which will bring significant honor to Northern Illinois University.  By visiting NIU, Her Royal Highness emphasizes the significance and renown of our Thai Studies program within the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.  And all of us involved with Global NIU appreciate very much the support and encouragement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand.

After the ceremony, please come over to the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center for the 21st Annual Study Abroad Fair, and bring your students!!  We will be featuring the many study abroad programs and international internships available to NIU students, including those led by NIU faculty.  Interested students and faculty will also be able to talk with students who’ve already completed a study abroad program and with representatives from the financial aid office. The fair will stay open on the 18th until 3:00 p.m. Please remember that study abroad is a vital way for students to enhance their career success by gaining 21st century skills in critical thinking, communication, and creativity.   For more information please visit

I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, September 18, at both the honorary degree ceremony at 9:30 and later, at the Study Abroad Fair!  Have a great fall semester
