Student Employee Performance Expectations

Whether you're a student employee or graduate assistant, you're essential to your department's operations. They'll have some general expectations of you, including the following. Be sure to ask about additional expectations.

  • Be aware of the advantages of student employment and how it can contribute to your career success.
  • Balance academic requirements and extracurricular activities with your employment obligations. You can't work during scheduled class or exam periods.
  • Don't exceed 20 hours per week. If you work multiple jobs, the total number of hours can't exceed 20. If you're a graduate assistant, work only the number of hours specified in your appointment.
  • Follow the schedule you developed with your supervisor, and be on time. If you're going to be late or absent, contact your supervisor immediately.
  • Make sure your time sheet is accurate and submit it on time. If you're a graduate assistant, keep an accurate record of your work hours.
  • Follow all university and department policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality. You may have access to confidential or sensitive information that should not be shared.
  • Communicate with your supervisor about goals and challenges.

  • Feedback that includes positive comments and suggestions for growth
  • Assistance and information when needed
