Payroll COVID-19 FAQ for Employees

Our top priority at NIU is the health and well-being of our campus community. During this stressful time, we need to work together as a community and take care of one another in a respectful and generous way.

Additional information will be posted on the university’s coronavirus updates page as it becomes available. Also see the COVID-19 communications page for campus messaging.

Questions about Payroll for Regular Employees

Will I continue to get paid?

NIU’s main priority is to ensure our employees are paid during these unprecedented times; please see below for your specific employment classification.

Will hourly Civil Service employees continue to get paid?

Yes. You will be paid standard hours for the pay period. For example, March 16 to March 31 is a 12 day pay period. Employees in this category that normally work 7.5 hours per day will be paid for 90 hours of work for this pay period. This includes any earned overtime, shift differential, or temporary upgrade as approved.

Can extra-help employees still work for NIU? Will they be paid?

For the pay period of 3/16/20 to 3/31/20, extra help employees that were scheduled to work will be paid for their scheduled work hours. For any extra help whose actual work hours were greater than scheduled, actual hours worked will be the pay entry. Beginning April 1, 2020, extra help employees will be paid for time worked.

Do I need to continue recording my time?

It remains important for employees and supervisors to record time and maintain records for future recordkeeping. Employees should continue to report their time to their supervisors (i.e. via email or other remote method), however, inked or electronic signatures will not be required. During this stay at home order it will not be necessary to provide those records to HRS.

How do I provide my hourly timesheet and salaried benefit usage form?

Employees should continue to report their time to their supervisors via email or other remote method. Inked or electronic signatures are not required. This information will be collected upon return to normal operations, and this documentation will need to be provided to supervisors for approval and processing to HRS.
