Organ or Bone Marrow Donor Leave

In accordance with the Organ Donor Leave Act (5 ILCS 327), eligible employees (faculty, supportive professional staff, and civil service) may be granted paid leave time for the purpose of donating an organ or bone marrow. Permanent full or part time employees who have been employed for at least six (6) months or more at NIU may be eligible for leave under this act.  Medical documentation of the proposed organ or bone marrow donation is required for approval.  The employee shall submit documentation of the proposed organ or bone marrow donation to his/her department with as much advanced notice as possible. 

Up to 30 calendar days of paid leave may be granted in a 12-month period for the donation of an organ or blood marrow.  Employees are not required to use accumulated sick or vacation leave before requesting Organ or Bone Marrow Donor Leave.  Leave time is for up to 30 calendar days and holidays cannot be used to extend the allowable leave maximum.
