Blood or Blood Platelet Donor Leave

In accordance with the Organ Donor Leave Act (5 ILCS 327), eligible employees may be granted paid leave time for the purpose of donating blood or blood platelets. Permanent full or part time employees who have been employed for six (6) months or more may be eligible for leave under this act.  Leave time for the donation should be arranged at a time that is workable for both the employee and the department.  Prior approval for this leave must be granted by the employee’s immediate supervisor.  When the leave is requested, the employee should provide their supervisor with as much advanced notice as possible. 

Up to one hour or more of paid leave may be granted once every 56 days to donate blood.  Up to two hours or more hours for the donation of platelets may be granted in accordance with recognized standards, not to exceed 24 times in a 12-month period.  Employees are not required to use accumulated sick or vacation leave before requesting Blood or Blood Platelet Donor Leave.
