New Hall Cluster Move-out Checklist

Schedule Appointment and Update Address

• Sign up for a checkout appointment with your community advisor before your last final. Finish everything else on this list before your appointment.
• Update your permanent address at myniu.niu.edu.

Defrost Microfridge/Minifridge

• Go to go.niu.edu/microfridge to see a video of how to properly defrost.
• Empty and clean the entire microfridge/minifridge.
• Unplug the microfridge/minifridge.
• Defrost the freezer.
• If there is ice buildup, start defrosting two or three days before you leave.
• Tilt the unit back and leave the doors open.

Remove Belongings and Clean

• Put your room’s furniture back in its original layout. See room layouts at go.niu.edu/layouts.
• Completely empty your closet, drawers, and vanity.
• Leave your drawers and closet unlocked.
• Remove all personal belongings from your room.
• Remove all trash from the room. Sweep and vacuum the floor.
• Donate any items in reasonable condition to the blue Goodwill bins located in the lobby.
• Take large trash items (like old carpet) to the dumpster.
• Close and lock the windows.
• Close the curtains or blinds.
• Set your thermostat:
  • New Hall, Grant, Gilbert and Stevenson North: Leave thermostat in the ‘on’ position, in cool mode and set to 74°F.
  • Stevenson South: Leave the toggle switch in the ‘on’ position with the dial set in the middle.

Kitchenette Area

• Clean the microwaves.
• Empty and clean the cupboards.
• Clean the sink.
• Empty all trash cans.

Laundry Room

• Clean and empty the washer and dryer of all clothes.
• Clean the laundry room.
• Leave the washing machine door open.

Other Areas

• Check that all furniture is present and clean in the cluster area.
• Make sure the television remote control is present and in working condition.
• Bring 3D glasses to area office.
• Make sure the telephone is present and working.
• Set the thermostat at 74°F.
• Close all mini-suite doors.
• Check that the vacuum is present and working.

During Your Check-out Appointment

• Make sure to close and lock your door when you leave.
• Turn off the lights.
• Clear out your mailbox and pick up any packages.
• If you have a backup key, return it to the front desk with the original key.
• Sign your key envelope form.
