Health House Ambassador Application

The goals of the Academic Learning Communities are to provide an engaging environment residential students where they can (1) build strong relationships with students with common interests; (2) connect with outstanding NIU faculty and staff; and (3) engage in high quality programs.

The Health Professions House is a Living-Learning Community located in Stevenson A Tower.

Health House Ambassadors serve as undergraduate program coordinators working directly with the House Coordinator. They will play an integral role in nurturing a residential learning community among residents and to connect students to the college or student service unit. Ambassadors will have an opportunity to build their own interpersonal communication and leadership skills through their role as program planners and as mentors/role-models for residents. This is a live-in position that requires approximately 15 hours/each week.  Room is also provided, but Ambassdors will still be responsible for their meal plan.

Primary Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Coordinate/be involved with specific House activities
  • Plan programs in collaboration with other Ambassadors or with the Community Advisors (CA) in the House. All programs and activities must be approved by the faculty coordinator.
  • Participate in programs associated with the College or student service unit associated with the house.
  • Represent the House at all University Open House programs.
  • Plan service and community outreach actives.
  • Attend residence hall meetings and meet regularly with House Coordinator.
  • Other activities or responsibilities as assigned
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of Housing and Residential Services and serve as a general role model for House residents.
  • Assist with marketing efforts.
  • Lead or participate in regular meetings with other House Leaders and/or advisors
  • Be active participant in floor activities and work in cooperation and collaboration with the CA on the floor to build community among residents.

House Specific Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Plan, execute and attend Snack Chat programs
  • Write articles for the monthly Health House newsletters
  • Prepare promotional materials for programs and events
  • Update residents regularly on programs and events
  • Take on a specific area of responsibility for one of the following (i.e., team leader, field trip coordinator, special events, public relations, or service projects). Assignments for specific responsibilities will be determined at the time of hire or during training activities.

General Qualifications

  • Full-Time NIU Student
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Prior leadership experience is preferred.
  • Resume required.
  • Must be in judicial good standing with Housing and the University.

House-Specific Qualifications

  • Be a major within the College of Health & Human Sciences (other majors may be considered based on other qualifications or previous relevant experiences.)
  • Minimum 2.50 NIU cumulative grade point average. Preference will be given to applicants with a 2.75 cumulative GPA, experience of living in the Health Professions House and having been an active member in the House.

Housing and Remuneration Details

  • Single room in Stevenson Towers for the 2018-2019 academic year. (value: approximately $6,000 per semester.) Ambassadors will be responsible for their own meal plan with Housing and Dining Services. Every effort will be made to provide the Ambassador with the floor option/lifestyle choice as requested.
  • Opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Opportunities to work closely with faculty and staff of the College of Health and Human Sciences

Supervision

Health House Ambassadors will report to the Faculty Coordinator for the Health House. They will meet frequently with the faculty coordinator and the faculty advisors. Students not meeting position responsibilities as posted will have to resign their position for the spring 2019 semester and will be billed for the single room charges in Stevenson Hall.

The deadline to apply is January 31. Interviews will occur between February 1 and March 16. House Leader selections will be made by March 16. House Leader training will occur on Friday, March 23 from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
