Services

We offer a set of free standard hearing tests to NIU students, faculty and staff. We also offer additional tests to students who are willing to help support our research.

All information will be kept confidential. If you have any questions, please contact our director, Dr. Charles Pudrith, at cpudrith@niu.edu.

Standard Testing

Appointments for standard tests take about 25 minutes. You’ll fill out a short questionnaire, and we’ll perform the following tests:

  • Outer and middle ear screens.
  • Standard pure-tone air conduction hearing test.
  • Cochlear function test (otoacoustic emissions).

Research Testing

If you’re a student between the ages of 18 and 25, you can participate in additional testing that will help us with our research. You’ll be compensated with a set of musician’s earplugs (a $13.95 value). Research testing includes the following:

  • Outer and middle ear screens.
  • Standard pure-tone air conduction hearing test.
  • Cochlear function test (otoacoustic emissions).
  • An in-depth case history.
  • Pure-tone hearing test in the high frequency range.
