Five Ways to Succeed in the Classroom

  • 1

    Ask Questions

Ask for help when you need it and ask early. Reach out to your professors, your academic advisor, fellow Huskies and our Huskie Academic Support Center. Take advantage of the resources available to you at NIU.

  • 2

    Communicate

Connect with professors through email, online discussion forums and chats, virtual office hours and Blackboard. Share your interest and passions. Just reach out! They want to hear from you.

  • 3

    Stay Organized

Keep a weekly schedule, check your MyNIU email regularly and log in to Blackboard often. Academic advisors are available to provide one-on-one support to help you create academic plans for career and personal success.

  • 4

    Engage

Talk to your professor or fellow Huskies about setting up study groups or find a study buddy. Form virtual study groups through Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Find an academic club or organization that interests you. In-person events and activities might be limited, but there are still plenty of ways to connect virtually. Find out how by visiting our brand new Huskie Link.

  • 5

    Be Patient

Give yourself and others a break when needed, and keep in mind the current circumstances are temporary. We know pressure and stress can arise from balancing busy schedules and academic commitments, even during “normal” times. We get it. Resources are available both inside and outside the classroom. The Center for Student Assistance is a hub for general student concerns, while Counseling and Consultation Services provides tele-health for students experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety or general emotional health. Just know we’re here to help.
