Learning Objectives & Assessments

In an online course, it is important for students to know the goals of the course and how they will achieve them. Clear learning objectives establish a foundation upon which the rest of the course is built, and assessments evaluate student progress in achieving those objectives. In this recorded online workshop you will learn to write student-centered module-level learning objectives that align to course-level learning objectives, to design assessments that measure the stated learning objectives, and to establish clear policies and criteria for grading.

The Importance of Starting with Learning Objectives and Assessments

Your course may already have required learning objectives, or you may have created your own. The learning objectives are the foundation of your course. They are what you want your students to be able to do at the completion of the course. You may also have more discrete learning objectives that identify what students may be able to do after a section, unit, or module of the course. These module-level objectives should align with the course-level objectives. The assessments will be what you use to measure the students' achievement of the learning objectives. A variety of formative and summative assessments can be added to your online course.
