Summer Music Workshops

Brass Workshop

This summer the NIU Brass Workshop will provide high school brass students a chance to develop their technique through guided fundamentals and improve ensemble skills through brass chamber music. NIU brass faculty will lead masterclasses and clinics on warmup and fundamentals, stretching and breathing, skills for effective practice, diverse career paths in music and audition preparation. The day will conclude with an afternoon concert featuring student and faculty performances.

9 a.m. Registration, coffee/donuts and learn about NIU
9:30 a.m. Breathing/stretching with Thomas Bough
10 a.m. Trumpet/horn/trombone/tuba warm up and fundamental session 
11 a.m. Trumpet/horn/trombone/tuba ensembles
Noon Lunch: feel free to pack a lunch, visit local Dekalb restaurants or eat at the Holmes Student Center
1 p.m. Masterclass (separate instrument rooms)
2 p.m. Electives: Music Career Paths with Prof. Scott Tegge, Audition Preparation with Chris Scanlon, Electronics for Practicing with Andrew Glendening
3 p.m. Large brass ensemble rehearsal
4 p.m. Faculty recital and brass ensemble performance

Saxophone Workshop

NIU Saxophone Day will provide high school saxophonists the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and enrich their experience of both classical and jazz saxophone performance practice through a one-day saxophone intensive. Topics addressed include technique, sound production, learning and performing the repertoire of each genre, improvisation and structuring your practice to achieve your personal goals.

1 p.m. What’s the difference anyway? A discussion about the similarities and differences between the classical and jazz saxophone concepts, from embouchure to practice routine
1:30 p.m. The jazz saxophonist: performance practice. Learning tunes and practicing improvisation
2:15 p.m. The classical saxophonist: performance practice. Classical saxophone repertoire and etudes

Double Reed Workshop

Enhance your double reed knowledge with NIU Professors Emily Fagan and John Gaudette! The workshop will provide students with masterclasses, reedmaking classes, chamber coaching and an end-of-the-day performance. Join us to learn more about the vast opportunities offered by the NIU double reed studios! This workshop is open to incoming high schoolers and older.
