For the health and safety of all who participate in our summer programs, NIU will not be hosting face-to-face camps on any of our campuses this summer. But, we are thrilled to announce we will be holding the Theatre Arts Camp online!

Spend a week learning and playing with the Avalon String Quartet!

The Avalon has performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd St Y, Merkin Hall, and Bargemusic in New York; the Library of Congress and National Gallery of Art in Washington DC; Wigmore Hall in London; and Herculessaal in Munich.

Open to individual string players or pre-formed groups. The study of chamber music is one of the best ways to develop your listening skills while enjoying performing some of the greatest works in the repertoire. This retreat is designed to improve your performance skills and musicianship.

You will benefit from:

  • Masterclasses
  • A private lesson
  • Free concerts and seminars
  • Recreational activities

You will stay in Gilbert Hall during the retreat. Your experience will end with a concert open to your friends and family.

The precise schedule and other information will be sent by the end of May.


Participation in the Avalon Quartet Chamber Music Retreat is by application only.

Completed application form with the private teacher’s recommendation and a five-minute recording due May 1, 2020. Accepted applicants will be emailed a link with the registration form.

Students work with several NIU faculty members, as well as the Avalon String Quartet, one of the country's leading chamber music ensembles. The members of the Avalon String Quartet include: Blaise Magniere, Marie Wang, Anthony Devroye and Cheng-Hou Lee are also NIU faculty members.

First, take your luggage to Gilbert Hall. Next, go to the nearby Music Building. Free parking is available in front of Gilbert Hall and in the lot south of the Music Building.
