Safety Protocols for In-Person Activities

Per NIU and the NIU School of Music, CSA teachers and students who attend CSA activities in-person must adhere to these safety requirements until further notice.

  • On the days you plan to be in the music building, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, do not come in and call the CSA office at 815-753-1450. Contact your students or teacher to cancel any in-person activities. Students and teachers should be symptom-free for 72 hours before attending lessons, classes or rehearsals. View an updated version of the symptom list:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • CSA teachers and ensemble directors must wear a mask when teaching private lessons, classes, or directing rehearsals in any interior space in the music building. Masks are available in Music Building room 140, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • CSA students and ensemble members must wear a mask when attending a class or private lesson in the music building and during ensemble rehearsal in the music building unless the student/ensemble member is using their mouth to play their instrument (includes voice/singing).
    • For all students playing an instrument, a minimum distance of six feet must be kept from others.
  • CSA private music teachers who teach lessons in person in the music building must request an approved room to use for teaching, using the room request form on paper or online. Room requests can only be approved on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • CSA private music teachers and ensemble directors (and their students/members) must wipe down all chairs and music stand to be used during lesson or rehearsal before the lesson or rehearsal can begin. Wipes will be available in all rooms for this purpose; used wipes must be disposed of in a designated garbage can. This protocol makes each participant responsible for sanitizing the surface they will be touching.
  • Ensemble members should observe social distancing when arriving and leaving, and during in-person rehearsals. Chairs and stands should be arranged to allow for social distancing with no more than one student per music stand (no sharing stands). Each ensemble member should put away their own chair and stand before leaving rehearsal. Some doors may be designated entry or exit only.
  • Private music students and their teachers should observe social distancing during in-person lessons as much as possible.
  • Parents of CSA students should avoid bringing additional persons into the music building during lessons, classes or ensemble rehearsals.
  • No one should bring food into the building or eat food while inside the building.
  • Elevators in the building may be only used by one person at a time or one family group at a time.
