Academic and Research Programs in Hydrogeology in Central Myanmar

July 25th-August 5th, 2016

The primary goal of the workshop with Yadanabon University and University of Mandalay is to continue the development of academic and research programs in hydrogeology in Myanmar. This two week educational and hands-on training short course at Yadanabon University will bring three faculty/graduate students from Northern Illinois University (NIU)/ Oregon State University (OSU) to educate and train local students, faculty, and professionals on groundwater development, well construction, well head protection, and groundwater quality/sampling. Participants should bring a laptop and ideas to work on while they are here. Introduction to hydrogeology Introductory topics such as the hydrologic cycle, properties of aquifers, principles of groundwater flow, and the effects of the local/regional geology on groundwater systems will be covered.

Groundwater Development

Using the basics of hydrogeology in the development/management of aquifers, and preventing water shortages.

Well Construction

Instructions/guidelines in well construction, and the need for well construction standards in the region.

Wellhead Protection

Guidelines for protecting an area around a water supply well from external influences on a subsurface system.

Water Quality/Sampling

Investigations into groundwater contamination. This portion will cover groundwater monitoring, chemical analysis, transport of solutes, and groundwater restoration.

Open-Source Software

How to incorporate your data into open-source software in constructing groundwater models.
