About the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning
Welcome to the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning (OSEEL)!
Our office is dedicated to providing opportunities for all undergraduates to engage in undergraduate research and service-learning that are considered both considered high impact practices. Our office also oversees EngagePLUS, the co-curricular transcript notation, that allows you to highlight all exceptional NIU out-of-classroom experiences.
Each of our programs align directly with the eight NIU's student learning outcomes as we seek to inspire and enable you to enhance your cognitive, social and academic skills to better prepare you to be life-long learners and responsible citizens in our ever-changing, global society.
We work collaboratively with other divisions and colleges at NIU to create sustainable, relevant, student-centered, research-based programming. These programs utilize experiential learning, both in and out of the classroom, to promote and sustain student academic success. We help you learn to succeed both at NIU and in your future endeavors.
Northern Illinois University has embraced Kuh's model for enacting student engagement and experiential learning in our campus and community. NIU is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in the category of Research Universities (high research activity). We applied and received the Outreach and Partnership elective designation in December 2008. In 2010, NIU was also honored with the Community Engagement classification. To learn more about our qualifications, view a copy of our application for this classification (PDF).
