MyNIU Student System maintenance The MyNIU Student System will be unavailable on Friday evening, Sept. 18, from 5-10 p.m. due to system maintenance.
Paperless I-9 verification process launches Sept. 15 Beginning Sept. 15, 2020, the process for Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification will be automated electronically through a secure web service. Paper forms will no longer be accepted in Human Resource Services.
Previously, personnel in the hiring department were responsible for verifying the employee’s printed information and documentation. I-9 verification will now be automated as part of the new employee onboarding process, with the employee providing the necessary information electronically. If you have any questions, please contact your employment coordinator.
NIU is also now recognized as an E-Verify employer. E-Verify is an internet-based system that compares information entered by an employer from an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to confirm employment eligibility.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Training Center announces the Fall 2020 Virtual Training Series The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Training Center is pleased to announce the fall 2020 training series. This semester, the EAP and Training Center will be offering a robust schedule of training opportunities for university employees virtually. Presenters from our department and program specialists across campus will be providing workshops for university employees seeking professional or personal skills development, supervisory skills, leadership development and even information for employees seeking to make a change on campus.
To learn more about the workshops offered in the upcoming months, please visit the EAP website. All training sessions this semester will be offered via Microsoft Teams. Employees can register for the training sessions by emailing us. Please visit the Training webpage regularly as new workshops will continue to be added over the course of the semester, and review the training links from our campus training partners to examine the wealth of training opportunities available. We request employees interested in any of the trainings contact our office in advance of the training date. Last Chance to Enroll Children Ages 6 to 12 for Fall Art Express Class The NIU Community School of the Arts has a few spaces available for children ages 6 to 12 in our Art Express class that begins this Saturday, Sept. 19. This popular art class meets from 1 to 3 p.m. for six weeks and will be held in person, outdoors or in an open-air environment near/around the Art Building. School of Art students teach this class with guidance from NIU faculty member Shei-chau Wang and all materials are provided.

| Large freshman class, strong retention lift NIU enrollment After months of dire predictions nationwide for fall college attendance, Northern Illinois University announced today that total enrollment is up for fall 2020. According to the official census on the 10th day of attendance, total enrollment for fall 2020 climbed to 16,769, up 160 students (1%) from 2019. Driving that growth is a freshman class of 2,047 (up 8%), and a 6-percentage-point improvement in retention of first-year students. Read more.

| NIU history woven throughout environmental art installation Thirty-four years ago, John Siblik was an NIU art student drawing up a concept for an environmental sculpture to be placed in the Kishwaukee River where it flows past the lagoon and the Music Building. Now, Siblik finds himself standing in that same river, in that same spot with a team of students and alumni installing that very same artwork.
Siblik is an associate professor in the School of Art and Design where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Art Education, and this is the sixth time he’s created and installed a version of this project. Read more. |

Featured Key Moment College of Law is established (1979) Shortly after Bill Monat became acting president of NIU in 1978, he was approached by representatives of Lewis University, a private institution headquartered in Romeoville with a new law school located in the western suburb of Glen Ellyn. The Lewis University College of Law was just four years old, had just received provisional accreditation from the American Bar Association, and had just graduated its first class of 218 new lawyers.
